Discovering....

I have have been experiencing a lot of "new"s in my life of late.  New living situation.  New school.  New experiences daily that I am relishing, savouring and devouring.  I started school at the Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts on Sept 12 and in the past 10 days I have had the biggest smile on my face. You simply can't wipe it off...ok, it has been rubbed off a couple of times but at least it comes back quick if smeared away.
I am seeing new faces, meeting new people, doing new things.  As to new faces.  One of the discoveries I have made in this time is that the area of Eglinton and Allen is a beautiful Jewish neighbourbood.  There are lots of fancy cars and men wearing suits with their "kippa's".  There are a few bagel shops and an Israeli store by my school.  I have yet to venture in to get a bagel...but I will soon!  I love it all!  It's a new place with lots to discover.
Due to the demographic, there are a lot of nannies.  How do I know?  Because every few steps there are Phillipino women pushing their little charges and walking along side them carrying the little kids back packs.  I have never seen so many nannies.  It's so neat  how you can tell they have their own little community and I can only imagine how tight it is being that many are far from home and from loved ones.
Discovering new People.  I have met my fair share and man, I have loved discovering every one of them!!!  If you know me, you know I like names.  I love people. And in my fathers footsteps, I like to ask questions of such aforementioned folks.  I have these new names in my friend book - Baura, Julia, Michelle, Krista, Anna Maria, Fatima, Shuli, Dana and Karen.   This is my new posse.  People I have been thrown in with in an environment that is intense and rejuvenating.  We are all here for different reasons...but for one we stand together on...we love to make pretty cakes!  I have met new teachers and have enjoyed making them blush.  I have even met people at Starbucks and enjoy connecting with new ways of life.
New Music.  I love music.  I do like some crazy stuff and the trendy stuff and the classical stuff too.  But I have discovered a new radio station. Ok, i know, it's not new...but heck, it's new to me!  CBC radio 2 at 94.1 is the best station out there for you commuters.  The morning and afternoon commute is made fresh and fun by the eclectic and funky music they play.  I never dreamed I would be commuting on the 401.  That's just nasty business.  But after discovering this amazing radio station PLUS a $4.00 / day parking lot - I am loving the commute.  It doesn't hurt like I feared. I had to hang up my dreams of being a subway girl as the parking is so cheap close to the school...but I am ok with it.  I will look forward to a subway commute for some other amazing adventure next time.
I am discovering that I can live with my mom taking over my kitchen.  That I can go running at night with my daughter riding her bike alongside me.  That I can l be a messy baker and be embraced for my inability to stay clean.  I am discovering that I can do this cake thing and with practice, I think I can do it well.  I am discovering that there is a lot of life to live out there and if I could just get over some of my stupid fears and worries, I will be able to live it fully.  Discovering Rocks.

Just say NO

I can't say No.  No, I am not talking about when people ask me for something.  I have learned that it's good to say no when I am feeling too busy or over-scheduled.  What I can't say NO to is baking.  Sweets are a problem for me - always have been and probably always will.       Today I had a bunch of bananas that were starting to encourage fruit flys to come and hang out and party.  I knew I needed to bake with them.  I have a kickass banana bread recipe that my family gobbles up so I knew that I would please the girls to no end if I baked for them.  I also had some fresh strawberries from the St. Jacobs Farmers Market, and rhubarb too.  I love love love rhubarb...especially in a pie....with strawberries.  So after tidying and cleaning today and feeling pretty good about life, I pulled out the bits and pieces and started creating yummy treats.  I also made this yummy curried barley and ...

Out of My Comfort Zone

I have a hard time believing I am ok.  I struggle with the acceptance that I can do things.  This, in return, halts me from branching out and doing some things that would challenge me and possibly make me more of a well-rounded and confident person.  I have confidence.  I know I am a good mom (most days).  I know I am a patient and kind wife (again, most days). But still, I lack in believing in myself.  Years ago I decided to do something for myself and enrolled in the night course at Humber College to do Interior Design.  I LOVED being back at school.  I was scared silly - but was so glad to be sitting in the back of a class room with my pen and paper in hand - ready to tackle hues, colours and shades!  I had a great year and did really well.  However, I went and got pregnant and had to quit school.  Doh!  I was good at the design thing....but deep down was probably happy to have to resign as my next course was drafting and th...

Great Expectations

You ever have a day when you are at the end of it and you just have to pinch yourself?  A day where you promised yourself to have no expectations and that was the healthiest thing you ever did?  I am the queen of expectations.  I have them in all facets of my life.  I put expectations on people, on things, on ovens, on schools, on hair, on weight, you name it....my thinking is often laced with expectations and they truly are my worst enemy. I used to have great expectations of my brother.  I have great expectations of my sister and friends.  They often come through for me, but there are times when I am let down.  And when I say let down, I am sometimes just crushed with the failure of it all.  My sister, Kara, has been my biggest coach in the "have no expectations" camp.  She has drilled this motto into me for years as she has seen me struggle with constantly being hurt when things didn't go my way, especially in relationships or events. ...
