Jesus Plays Hockey

My kids are very cute.  I am sure most  moms would agree with me - every mom thinks our kids are cute.  Our kids come up with some of the cutest sayings and doings.  Today Darren and I took the girls bowling.  The older 2 LOVE to bowl - it's always a fun family outing - not too expensive and pretty pain-free.  My kids know not to ask for food or money for the vending machines - so we can go in and out pretty unscathed.  My favourite part of bowling today was Kamrin and Mikka helping Luci to guide and roll the ball.  It really was overwhelmingly adorable how they talked to her, explained to her and eventually gave the ball a little extra shove to ensure the ball made it to the pins.  It was a joy to watch.  Later tonight - after a fun trip to Costco (Costco is always a fun treat) - we headed off to the skating rink with Daddy.  We have not had so much daddy time in months - it was an awesome treat.  On the way to the rink we were in discussion about the girls skating futures and whether or not they wanted to do hockey.  Mikka has decided that she definitely wants to play next year so she was going to skate in her old hockey skates tonight - to see if they fit and if she still enjoyed skating on those types of skates.  Then Kamrin started chirping that she wanted to play again next year too.  Of course, Luci wasn't to be left out and bellowed out that she, too, was going to play hockey.  In fact, she was going to go play hockey tonight!  I said it was too bad we didn't have any mini-sticks for her to play around with.  Mikka announced that our friend CJ has millions of mini-sticks, also that our friend Bryce plays with them too.  Then out of no where Luci adds, "And Jesus does too".  We all howled!!!  "Jesus plays mini-sticks, Luci?", I asked.  "YES! Jesus plays mini-sticks"  she declared.  priceless.  We aren't sure where that came from - but it was one of her cuter moments today!  And oh yeah....she cried the whole time on the ice and said she didn't want to play hockey after all.....that she'd do it next week.!DSC02768.JPG

Just say NO

I can't say No.  No, I am not talking about when people ask me for something.  I have learned that it's good to say no when I am feeling too busy or over-scheduled.  What I can't say NO to is baking.  Sweets are a problem for me - always have been and probably always will.       Today I had a bunch of bananas that were starting to encourage fruit flys to come and hang out and party.  I knew I needed to bake with them.  I have a kickass banana bread recipe that my family gobbles up so I knew that I would please the girls to no end if I baked for them.  I also had some fresh strawberries from the St. Jacobs Farmers Market, and rhubarb too.  I love love love rhubarb...especially in a pie....with strawberries.  So after tidying and cleaning today and feeling pretty good about life, I pulled out the bits and pieces and started creating yummy treats.  I also made this yummy curried barley and ...

Out of My Comfort Zone

I have a hard time believing I am ok.  I struggle with the acceptance that I can do things.  This, in return, halts me from branching out and doing some things that would challenge me and possibly make me more of a well-rounded and confident person.  I have confidence.  I know I am a good mom (most days).  I know I am a patient and kind wife (again, most days). But still, I lack in believing in myself.  Years ago I decided to do something for myself and enrolled in the night course at Humber College to do Interior Design.  I LOVED being back at school.  I was scared silly - but was so glad to be sitting in the back of a class room with my pen and paper in hand - ready to tackle hues, colours and shades!  I had a great year and did really well.  However, I went and got pregnant and had to quit school.  Doh!  I was good at the design thing....but deep down was probably happy to have to resign as my next course was drafting and th...

Great Expectations

You ever have a day when you are at the end of it and you just have to pinch yourself?  A day where you promised yourself to have no expectations and that was the healthiest thing you ever did?  I am the queen of expectations.  I have them in all facets of my life.  I put expectations on people, on things, on ovens, on schools, on hair, on weight, you name it....my thinking is often laced with expectations and they truly are my worst enemy. I used to have great expectations of my brother.  I have great expectations of my sister and friends.  They often come through for me, but there are times when I am let down.  And when I say let down, I am sometimes just crushed with the failure of it all.  My sister, Kara, has been my biggest coach in the "have no expectations" camp.  She has drilled this motto into me for years as she has seen me struggle with constantly being hurt when things didn't go my way, especially in relationships or events. ...
